Applicants with a M.Sc. in computer science from a German university or University of Applied Sciences and applicants with a B.Sc. in Computer Science from a German university already are formally qualified for admission.
For all other candidates, the PhD board decides on an individual base about admission to the PhD program and the potential qualification studies. For more information, see Phase 1: Graduate Studies .

If you have the support (including funding or external funding) of a faculty member with PhD supervision rights, you may be forwarded for direct admission. In this case, you can submit your application at any time.
In addition to the standard application documents, your application should provide a letter from the advisor confirming the supervision and providing suggestions for the qualification studies.
In particular, ad-hoc admission is possible for candidates that have been successful in the selection process of the affiliated institutes (e.g., MPI-SWS, DFKI, IESE).

You have to provide the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae (C.V.)
- Copies or certified translations of Bachelor/Master degrees, including transcript of records (in German or English)
- A motivation letter
- Proof of your English or German proficiency (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, TestDaF)
- Two letters of recommendation from faculty staff of a university or a research institute (if you have not graduated at the University of Kaiserslautern and if you are applying for a scholarschip)
